Austria is a popular tourist destination all year long. Vienna is the leader but other cities should definitely be considered as well. Keeping that in mind, here is a list of places you should consider.
Vienna is by far the largest city in Austria with its population of more than 1.7 million. It’s Austria's cultural, economic, and political center. Vienna is located in the Eastern part of Austria, traveling to some European cities is faster than visiting other big Austrian cities. With a territorial extension of 414.87 square kilometers, Vienna is just as big as New Orleans in the USA. Vienna is integrated in the Middle European Climate Zone. The result is a combination of humid weather, cool mainland winds from north or a cozy warm weather from south. Summer in Vienna is usually warm. June is moderate and sunny and in July and August, there are some hot and humid days where it reaches 35°C (95°F), but overall, summer is pleasant. Winter can be just above 0°C (32°F) or just below with dustings of snow that manage to melt again quickly.
The city lies on the northern side of the Alps, at the surroundings of the Northern Alps. This location gives Salzburg a very particular weather, masses of humid air coming from central Europe stucks in the region during the summer period, falling down over Salzburg and its outskirts. This precipitation brings a refreshing moment in the afternoons during the summer time. The weather in Salzburg is famous, the so-called "Salzburger Schnürlregen" or "rain in strings" has entered the German language to become something like a proverb, an expression similar to the English "it′s raining cats and dogs". June, July and August are the rainiest months. During January, February and March, it could get very cold, but remember there is no bad weather, only inappropriate clothing. With a population of approximately 150,000 people, it is the fourth-biggest city of Austria. Just out of curiosity, Salzburg is the place where the movie ‘The Sound of Music’ was shot. LOT airlines will fly you to Salzburg like music.
Graz lies on both sides of the Mur River, in the southeast of Austria. Graz is the capital and largest city in Styria, a green and heavily forested area. With a population of about 300.000 (450.000 in the greater area), Graz is the second largest city in Austria. The city's location influences the weather. Located on the south-eastern flank of the Alps all year long the region offers a nice and warm weather. Travelers visiting Graz can wait sunny summers but not overly hot. This next season is characterized by mild autumn and winter weather, which is often pleasant and not too extreme.
Summer is the most popular time to visit with evening temperatures favorable to enjoy the outside. June and October are arid and for that reason the safest period to visit Graz, with daytime temperatures about 25°C in July and August. With very short autumns, winters knock on the doors around October, bringing night frosts and snowy weather. Spring also shows its face early in the year and by March, spring is already painting a colorful scenery, with daytime temperatures around 10°C.
