Belarus remains a blank spot on the map for many foreigners. It is one of those countries you have likely never given much thought, but this former Soviet republic might surprise you. It is true that Belarus is a poor country. While it was one of the most economically advanced republics in the former Soviet Union, its economy declined rapidly after it became independent, but at the same time, Belarus doesn’t feel poor. The city was leveled in World War II, most of the buildings in Minsk date back no earlier than the mid-1940s. The good news for visitors is that Belarus remains incredibly inexpensive. Book your flight ticket to Belarus with LOT and discover the country.
Minsk is an attractive city, with clean, wide sidewalks made of colored brick, a river running through the center, and parks and monuments scattered throughout the city. The Museum of the Great Patriotic War makes for an interesting stop with several rooms full of sometimes graphic displays. The church of Saints Simon and Helena, also known as the Red Church is the signature building of Minsk. Finished in 1910, it now holds the memory of a beautiful but sad legend of its patron’s children. The National Opera and Ballet Theatre, finished in 1938 and reconstructed in 2010, this magnificent theater holds the culture of Belarusian Opera and Ballet traditions in the very heart of Minsk (full house is very usual here). Those are some of the attractions in the city. Easy day trips from the capital include castles in the towns of Mir and Nyasvizh, two open air museums, and an incredibly moving memorial at Khatyn, honoring the 2.3 million Belarusians who were killed during World War II.
Contrary to popular belief, there is more to Belarus than just Minsk. For art enthusiasts, Vitebsk, in eastern Belarus, is the home of painter Marc Chagall and features two museums in his honor. The city also makes a nice jumping off point to visit Polotsk, the oldest town in Belarus and home to the unique Sofia Cathedral. Vitebsk’s Town Hall was founded in 1597 when the city was granted the Magdeburg Right. The present-day building of the Town Hall dates back to the year of 1775. Other points worth visiting salt are: the mines/warehouses, the building of the circuit court, the first power plant and the Land-and-Peasant Bank.
Grodno (also called Hrodna) dates back to the 11th century and is one of the few towns in Belarus that wasn’t damaged in World War II so it's rife with old wooden homes and, although it's a major city, it definitely has a 'big village' sort of feel to it. As a town that historically was part of Poland or Lithuania, it feels the most European and has several churches and small museums worth a closer look. Take a city tour with an English speaking guide and get to see attractions such as: Boris and Gleb church (XII century), the archetype of Russian ancient stone architectures. Francis Xavier Cathedral (1678) an amazing monument of native architecture 17-18 centuries; The Holy Cross Church where the first pharmacy opened in 1687; Old Castle (XII-XIX); The New Castle (1751); The Evangelical Church and the Stone Synagogue.
