Chisinau is the capital and the largest city of Moldova, located in the central part of the country on the river Taurus (Bic). Its origins date back to the mid-fifteenth century, when it was just a small settlement, which less than a century later with the entire Moldova fell under Turkish dominion. Moldova is located between Romania and Ukraine and gained independence in 1991.
Chișinău International Airport (KIV, LUKK) is located 13km outside the Chisinau city center and it is main and the biggest international airport in Moldova. Chisinau Airport started to develop in the 1990s and in 1995 it awarded the status of an international airport. Akfen Holding- Turkish Company started to modernize the airport in 2002. The old terminal was renovated and an annex terminal was built next to it. The modernization involved complete change of ventilation and mechanical heating and all the electrical systems. Akfen Holding Company installed the electronic flight information system, luggage handling, master clock and the X-ray security. This renovations allowed to increase the annual capacity of the Chisinau International Airport to 5.4 million passengers. Chișinău Airport became also a member of Airports Council International. There are further plans to develop the airport. Future projects involve upgrading of the existing facilities as well as runway, more taxiways, aprons, and ramps, engineering works, safety equipment.
There is one big terminal at the Chisinau International Airport; consist of 5 gates and 10 check-in desks and much small VIP-terminal, which offers extra services for VIP and CIP travellers. In December 2006 the visitors’ terrace on the second floor was opened.
Chisinau Airport is located 13km from the city center. You can get to Chisinau center by bus and rutiera vans. You can take the 'AEROGARA' bus from Piața D. Cantemir. This bus line has intermediate stops in the city center on Stefan Cel Mare Street. Rutieră van line 165 goes to the Botanica district and then continues to the city center, with stops at the central railway station and ‘GARA’ bus station. There is also bus operating in a 30-minute interval, which may stop in any place, if you notify driver few seconds prior.
