Frankfurt is one of the best known cities in Germany. It is considered as financial and business centre of this country, which is reflected in many skyscrapers, modern design and huge airport. During World War II Frankfurt was almost completely destroyed. After the war was ended the city rebuilt only a small part of the old historic buildings. One of the most famous and recognizable one is almost three hundred meter Commerzbank, building, which has now become one of the symbols of the city.

How to get there
The airport is located about 20 kilometres southeast of the city center. Frankfurt Airport is directly linked to the A3 (Cologne-Munich) and A5 (Hanover-Basel) highways, which run along the eastern and northern boundary of the airport. These roads intersect at the Frankfurter Kreuz, giving access to national airports by road B43, which leads directly to the city center. The airport has two terminals, which are connected to each other by a free train. It takes 2 minutes to move between them.
There are also free buses connecting terminals. Bus Line 61 runs between the airport and the southern railway station in Frankfurt. It is also possible to take free bus to one of 25 hotels in Frankfurt. Taxis stand in front of each terminal. It takes around 30 minutes to get to the city centre and it costs 30 euros. Like on every airport you can also rent a car from one of many companies.
You can also get to the city center by train or S-Bahn. Train station is located at the airport and it is possible to take a national or international train there. A trip to Frankfurt city center by S-Bahn takes about 11 minutes, with trains running every 15 minutes. It costs 3,55 euros. Each terminal has it own parking with 14 000 parking spots. If you will book it in advance you can get a better price. In front of terminal you can park a car for 15 minutes and it costs 1 euro.
Airport terminals and expansion
Frankfurt airport consists of two terminals. First terminal is older and bigger. It has 103 gates. Terminal 1 has three levels. On level 1 you will find departures and check-in counters, on ground zero there is arrival area and a baggage claim zone and on the lowest level there is a regional train station. Terminal 2 has 42 gates and it handles 15 million passengers a year. By 2022 it is planned to open third terminal. At first phase it should handle 15 million passengers a year. In future this number should increase to 25 million.
At the airport operates more than 130 stores. You will find there clothing boutiques, duty-free shops (for passengers departing from EU) and kiosks. Shopping Plaza at Level 2 in Terminal 2 offers a wide selection of shops. Behind the security check there are branches of many banks, currency exchange offices and cash machines. There are also pharmacies and medical points in case of emergency. Frankfurt airport has also a lots of facilities for busy travellers. In both terminals you can take a shower for 8 euros. If you need to change your hairstyle or just refresh it a little bit there is a hairdresser. There is also a dry cleaning, which is open from 7am till 8pm (Mon-Fri) and from 9am till 5pm (Sat-Sun). Frankfurt city center
For sure if you want to be close to most of the city’s attractions you should stay in the city center. Choice of hotels here is really big and for sure everyone can find something that meets their expectations. The obvious advantage of staying in one of them is often beautiful view of the city and closeness to most of important places in Frankfurt. Central part of the city covers the old town. The old center of Frankfurt

There are also many old churches, such as thirteenth century church Bartholomew (Bartholomäus) with 95 meter tower added in the fifteenth century. You will find here also the oldest theatres in the city. Interesting for every person who does not speak German language are English theatres, where you can spend a nice evening. In this part of town there are also a lot of places to eat and drink something. The variety of restaurants will satisfy everyone. You can choose between European, Asian and of course traditional German cuisine.
Sachsenhausen is perfect area for everyone who wants to be close to the center, but prefers less busy place. Like a lot of places in Frankfurt it is a mix of old and new. The main square- Schweizer Platz with old- styled buildings is the heart of this neighbourhood. You will find there many hotels, as well as bakeries, flower shops, bookshops and boutiques. This area is very popular among young locals and tourists because of its old charm and lots of popular cafes, pubs (with local cider), restaurants and shops.
In Sachsenhausen there are also a lot of museums. You can learn something about architecture in German Architecture Museum, get to know German film history in German Film Museum, see Jewish Museum or Museum of Communication. There is also a big choice of hotels in the airport area. So if you have limited time you can be sure you will find a comfortable one. They are usually very well connected to the terminals.
