Lviv airport [LWO]
Lviv airport was until 2012 a small international airport. Usually travellers were very disappointed with its tiny size and poor quality of service. Fortunately, after Ukraine together with Poland hosted UEFA EURO 2012 Football Championship the airport changed and grew. Now you can use modern and comfortable new terminal, which was opened in 2012. This stain and glass building is able to handle 2000 passengers per hour. You can reach from here many international destinations. One of them is direct flight to Lviv from Warsaw offered by LOT Polish Airlines.
History of Lviv Airport
The history of Lviv Airport dates back to 1923, when it was under construction for around 5 years. During this time the city was rapidly developing so it needed also an aviation hub. The former Danylo Halytskyi Lviv International Airport terminal was built in 1950 and it served till 2012. For all these years up till now it was the major air cargo hub for West Ukraine. Now it is the biggest and main airport in this region. In 2011 it served 296900 passengers.
During preparation of Football Championship in 2012 the Government of Ukraine decided to modernize existing and build new infrastructure of airports in the country. Now the capacity of new terminal increased significantly as well as the comfort in the airport. Although it seems a little bit empty inside, it has a lot of space for future growth of number of passengers. It is expected to serve more than 3.7 million by 2020.
How to reach the airport
The airport is located 6 kilometres from Lviv city center and it is really easy to reach it. There is a short and long term parking lot very close to the terminal. It is possible to rent a car in one of international car rental companies. Very convenient is also pick- up service. You have to reserved it in advance and after the driver can pick you up to your hotel or any destination in a city. There is also very comfortable taxi service.
There is one condition to use though, you have to own an Ukrainian number. By selecting a corporation’s phone number you are disconnected for 10-15 seconds. Then they call you back and ask about the details of the route. After giving you price and time travel they disconnect. Once it is done you receive an SMS in which you get a confirmation and car specifics. Do not worry if you don’t have the Ukrainian number. In this case taxi service works like in any other place. If you want to use a public transport there is a bus number 95 (ticket price 1,50 UAH) and trolleybus number 9 (ticket price 1 UAH). You can easily reach city center in around 30-40 minutes.
The airport facilities
Once the new terminal was built, the comfort increased enormously. Now it has everything you need in modern European airport. You will find a tourist information on the ground floor, as well as cash machines, currency exchange offices and police service. Wi-Fi is available in the whole building. There are also some cafes and duty free shops with really good prices. The terminal has 29 check-in desks. There is still a lot of space in the building and the main focus now is to improve it and provide best quality service.
After Ukraine hosted UEFA Championship in 2012 Lviv’s infrastructure improved and grew a lot. The city had always a lot to offer and now with many hotels and hostels to choose from it is a very attractive tourist destination. You can easily find one of direct flights to Lviv, for example the ones from Warsaw, offered by LOT Polish Airlines. Choosing the perfect place to stay should be as easy as finding a flight. There are various hotels, hostels and many comfortable guest rooms in very reasonable prices and locations. The only thing is to decide what do you expect from your accommodation and how much are you able to pay for it.
Flights to Lviv
Like in many large cities Lviv hotels are quite numerous and their standard, as well as the prices, vary significantly. Basically they are divided into two groups. The first are the post- communist ones, which have been renovated only in small part. The standard in those kind of facilities is rather poor. This is why you have to be very careful, while looking for a hotel here. It happens quite often that you can use warm water only in certain hours and there is only one shared bathroom on each floor.
The second group are new high-end hotels or beautifully restored old ones. The prices are usually the highest in the city, but you will get great standard in return. They are often located in the strict city center, so if you are looking for a very comfortable accommodation, this will be the perfect choice. Unfortunately there are not many hotels in reasonable prices with corresponding standard and services. You have to choose between very low standard and prices or completely the opposite. Fortunately there is a good solution for this problem.
Lviv apartments and guest rooms
If you would like to stay in a quiet place and you do not need the luxury of expensive hotel, you should choose a private apartment. It will give you more personal space for a reasonable price. There is a big choice of guestrooms, where you can rent a room from an Ukrainian family. If you prefer a higher standard there are also a lot of well equipped apartments, which will give you the standard of a hotel, but for much lower price. Staying in this kind of accommodation is also much better for people who plan to visit Lviv for a longer period of time.
If you are a budget traveller and you don’t want to spend a lot of money on accommodation, you will have plenty options. There are many hostels in Lviv, where the cost of one night in a shared room is around 5 Euros. For a little bit more demanding travellers there are a lot of hostels offering double room, which gives you more private atmosphere. The cost of it is around 7-8 Euros per person. The greatest advantage of hostels in the city is their location. You can choose from many facilities, which are just a walking distance from a city center.
The hotels and hostels range is big enough to meet expectations of travellers with different needs. Thanks to cheap air tickets to Lviv and many accommodation possibilities everyone can spend great time in this city.
