Old Town – Altstadt

History and development
The first terminal building was designed in the style of Stalinist architecture by V.Beridaze and it was opened in 1952 and it was growing and developing since then. By 1981 Tbilisi airport was the 12th largest airport in the whole Soviet Union with capacity almost 1.5 million passengers per year in so-called central lines, which were connecting capitol of Georgia with other Soviet Union’s cities. In 1990, the second terminal building was constructed and it was designed in International style. During second half of 90’ capacity of the airport shrunk to 230.000 passengers per year.
Since 2005 Shota Rustaveli Tbilisi International Airport is operated by TAV Airports Holding. The Company agreed with the Georgian state-owned United Airports of Georgia that the development of the airport was needed. They decided to reconstruct an unused runway and extend it according to the ICAO standards. A new international terminal was constructed. New apron, taxiway and general facilities followed modern architectural concepts. All the renovations brought the airport to the new century helping increasing the passenger’s traffic up to 1.5 million passengers.
The new Tbilisi International Airport terminal has 3 boarding bridges, 25 check-in counters and 32 passport control points. If you need to exchange money you will find several banks that provide this kind of service, they are located in the main hall. Duty-free shop is located in departure area, and it has a wide variety of products such as alcohol, tobacco and cosmetics. You can also find here local wine and souvenirs. Wines are a plus in Georgia, don’t miss this chance. There are two cafes situated in arrivals area along with a burger restaurant, and bar open 24 hours. There is free Wi-Fi internet access available at the airport, passengers can also use public telephones, which are available within the terminal.
Tbilisi Airport is located 17km southeast of the city. There are plenty options of transport available at the airport at any time of the day.
The airport is connected with the city center by a modern railway and the station is located right in front of the international terminal. Hold all your excitement this a little bit longer, journey takes around 25-30min and costs about 0.5 gel (0.30 usd). Passengers can buy the tickets in the ticket office located in the railway station or straight with the train conductor inside the train. You can also choose public transport, city bus N37 is available between 07:00 AM and 9:30PM every day and it costs around 0.4 gel (0.25 usd).
