The airport was opened on 17 August 1932 in the small village of Porubanek, which today is part of the city. At the beginning, before the II World War, Vilnius airport was serving flights from and to Warsaw and Riga. After 1991 Lithuanian Airlines was established as the Lithuanian flag carrier and then replaced by Soviet-era aircraft types with modern Boeing 737 and Boeing 757 jets and Saab 340, Saab 2000 turboprops. In 2009, due to financial difficulties almost all airport operations were suspended. Today, after Vilnius became more attractive destination for the travellers, the airport is growing and developing again.
The terminal building is designed in the standard Soviet style and originally intended with around 20 aircraft movements per day. There are sculptures of soldiers, workers and aviators located outside the facility. Inside the terminal walls and ceilings are decorated with wreaths, bay leaves and stars.
New terminal was opened in November 2007. Building is divided for Schengen and Non-Schenden zone according to the requirements of the Schengen agreement. There are 6 boarding bridges, modern passenger check-in equipment, new travel value, duty-free shops and business and VIP Lounges available at the terminal. Legend says that the city was born from an iron wolf. Vilnius stands in the edge of east and west, a heritage to the Lithuanians' registry as the last people to follow the old religions in Europe and brave warriors who in medieval times enlarged their dominion as far as the Black Sea. Amongst a rich collection of architectural styles, Baroque is prevalent, but not like in many places around South America, here the crosses of Catholic churches and the Pagan symbols of the sun and the moon (wife and husband in Lithuanian mythology), combining creating a unique style of art and religion.
Booking a flight to Vilnius with LOT will give you the chance to wonder around this historical place.
A UNESCO World Heritage site, the city's charming Old Town is a visual treat. Churches, meandering cobbled streets and intimate courtyards, it is definitely a place to appreciate. Budget accommodations are also offered by hostels and they are also very well located, usually close to where nightlife takes place. There are little bars everywhere, poked into little gaps in medieval architecture, but when staying in hostels make sure to talk to the staff member, they will point you the best places to dance the night out.
If you are traveling with family or friends and like to have your own space, you can always rent an apartment, a private room or double room. Vilnius offers a wide number of private apartments that include around 500 complete places to rent, and they are, mostly, central located. If you’re looking for a pleasant time with you family this might be the most confortable option for you. If exploring with your partner a single room accommodation could be the best alternative. They offer enough privacy, space and comfort for two. Check all the options, more than 130 rooms are available with different services and prices.
Sharing the Roof
If travelling with a friend, this could be the best way to save money and yet enjoy comfort and safety. There are not a great number of options available and given its location and prices, they are often booked, so remember to plan way ahead. One important information is that if you are considering visiting during the high season, accommodation is a question to be taken care of in advance, as the city may get crowded and not have enough rooms considering the number of visitors, especially if you are looking for budget accommodations.
