Levoča

A paradise for connoisseurs of small towns! It flourished in the Middle Ages as an important trading centre and used to be called the “Slovak Nuremberg”. Crafts, especially goldsmithing and copper engraving, developed here, it was also the place of work of the great artist of the region, Master Paul of Levoča. Later, in the 19th century, it played a significant role for the Slovak cultural and national movement. Come here for a relaxed walk, get impressed by the local architecture and contemplate the art without hurry!

Spiš Castle

The mighty fortress guarding the Spiš region is one of the biggest and most valuable attractions of Slovakia. Well, no wonder! With an area of over 4 hectares (sic!) it is one of the largest sites of its kind in this part of Europe! You’ll be surprised from the first sight with its majestic structure, which sits on a rock outcrop 634 metres above sea level. Later you will be amazed also by the momentum with which this fortress was being built from the 13th century onwards. Finally, don’t miss the sights of the charming Spišské Podhradie, in particular the Spišská Kapitula with the Cathedral of Saint Martin. The whole area, together with Levoča, was inscribed on the UNESCO list in 1993.

Orava Castle

Another one of Slovakia’s best attraction is located on a high rock above Orava! Orava Castle will delight every fan of medieval fortresses with its beautiful location, magnificent building and a long and interesting history. Of course, the whole site is open to the public so get ready for a day full of (medieval) attractions!

Bojnice Castle

Nevertheless, it is the castle in Bojnice, which tourists visit the most. This is another powerful stronghold with a great history, which had to resist hostile attacks more than once. It was rarely seized, but in the 19th century it’s role became completely insignificant. Therefore, the owner of the castle rebuilt it in the then fashionable neo-Gothic style with a Romantic character. Despite this, much of the original building, including the interior furnishings, has survived unaltered. It’s worth going inside, have a journey through the centuries, and participate in various events!
