How can I transport an electric wheelchair?

The transportation of a wheelchair, regardless of its type, is free of charge.

We are familiar with various types of electric wheelchairs, their weight, and different specifications, so we strongly encourage you to contact the Customer Service Department in advance to check the transportation options for this type of equipment.

Types of batteries in wheelchairs – transport rules

Electric wheelchairs are classified into groups based on the type of battery.

These three types have almost identical rules:

Where we transport them: They can stay in the wheelchair. If they are removed (or are spare), they must be placed in the cargo hold in a strong, impermeable package provided by you.

Protection: They must be protected against short circuits (e.g., terminals taped) and accidental activation.

Spare limits: Max. 1 spare for non-spillable wet batteries; max. 2 spares for nickel and dry batteries.

Documentation: The passenger must have proof that the non-spillable wet battery meets the temperature and vibration tests of the A67 standard.
This is the most demanding type, as they can leak.

Where we transport them: Always in the cargo hold. They can remain in the wheelchair only if the wheelchair will be charged and transported vertically at all times.

If you remove the battery: You must pack it in a special, sealed box with absorbent material inside, capable of absorbing the entire electrolyte (in case of leakage). The packaging must be provided by you.

Important: The batteries must have caps that prevent liquid leakage but allow for pressure regulation.
They are treated differently from the others due to a higher fire risk.

Documentation: The passenger must have proof that the battery has passed safety tests (UN 38.3).

Where we transport them:
If it remains in the wheelchair – under the deck (cargo hold).
If it is removed (or spare) – it must be taken into the passenger cabin. It must then be transported in a protective case.

Power limits: A removed or installed battery can have a maximum of 300 Wh. It is possible to transport one large battery (up to 300 Wh) or two smaller ones, as long as the total capacity does not exceed 300 Wh (e.g., two 150 Wh batteries or one 160 Wh and one 140 Wh battery are allowed, but two 160 Wh batteries are not).

Definition: Watt-hour [Wh] is the unit by which lithium-ion batteries are regulated. Lithium-ion batteries must be marked with the watt-hour value.

The watt-hour value of a lithium-ion battery can also be calculated based on the battery voltage [V] and capacity in ampere-hours [Ah].

Ah x V = Wh

If the battery is marked with milliampere-hours [mAh], you can divide this number by 1000 to get ampere-hours [Ah].

If you are unsure about the nominal value of the lithium-ion battery in watt-hours, refer to the device's manual or contact the manufacturer.

Important Information on Transporting an Electric Wheelchair
- The battery must be functional: We never accept for transport batteries that are damaged, leaking, or swollen.
- Report the wheelchair in advance: Inform PLL LOT about the wheelchair and its battery at least 48 hours before the flight. If this is not reported in advance, we cannot guarantee the transport of the equipment onboard.
- The data must be visible: All battery information must be on its casing (nameplate sticker). It must be easy for the staff to read.
- Staff does not disassemble parts: Airport staff cannot use tools or disassemble the wheelchair to check battery parameters. It is the passenger’s responsibility to ensure the data is accessible.
- Secure the wheelchair to prevent activation: The device must be prepared so it cannot turn on during the flight (e.g., key removed, joystick locked).
- Safety in the hold: The carrier is obligated to secure the wheelchair with straps or fasten it in a way that prevents it from shifting in the hold and damaging other luggage.
- Complete data is essential: We must check each battery thoroughly to ensure a safe flight. If you do not provide all the required parameters, we will not be able to take your wheelchair onboard.
- Due to limited space onboard, during check-in, your wheelchair will be handed over to the airport staff to be placed in the cargo hold. You will receive it back at the destination airport, right after leaving the aircraft.
