Olympic Games past and Olympic symbols

The first ancient Olympic Games were held in ancient Greece from 776 BC to 393 AD. They were held in honor of the most important Greek God Zeus and were an essential part of Greek history and culture.

After a gap of more than 1,500 years, this unique celebration of sports returned to Athens. Today it is held every four years, and the first modern Games were held there in 1896.

Also associated with the competitions are certain Olympic symbols and meanings that are an integral part of the event. Wondering what exactly is involved?

Below you will find the Olympic symbols:

  • Olympic motto - consists of three Latin words Citius-Altius-Fortius, which in free translation means faster higher stronger. The motto is the motto of the event itself and the International Olympic Committee.
  • Olympic rings- a globally recognized Olympic symbol, consisting of 5 intertwined circles of different colors. The colors of the circles are not coincidental and represent the primary colors of all national flags of the world and the diversity and difference of all 5 continents of the globe.
  • Olympic flag - was designed in 1913 and shows the Olympic circles on a white background. It is a symbol of universalism and the Olympic community. It is also called the flag of humanity.
  • Famous mascots - although the history of mascots in sports dates back to the 1920s, they only became an integral part of Olympic competition in the 1970s. This year's mascots are the so-called Phrygians - eye-catching hats associated with the spirit of the French Revolution.
