In the interwar period, Bucharest, the capital of Romania, became known as a "little Paris," but lost its historic face as a result of the wars, Ceausescu's reign and the earthquake. Today, it is known for its eclectic architecture, which is a combination of modern, social-realist and historical buildings, creating a unique style, that it is worthy to see, definitely.
The centrepiece of the city is the Palace of Parliament, which, after the US Pentagon, is the second largest government building in the world. This monumental building is a part of Bucharest's secret development plan, created over several decades. After the 1977 earthquake, the dictator at the time gave the order to demolish more than 7 square kilometres of the historic Old City to build monstrously large public administration buildings. Not much is left of "Little Paris," only the beautiful Triumphal Arch, built to honour Romanian-French friendship, and Bucharest's Champs-Élysées.
