What can you do in Croatia when you have seen all its attractions?

Thanks to its unique beauty, amazing landscapes and architecture, and virtually uninterrupted sunshine, Croatia has been an ideal film set for decades. If you are a fan of the Game of Thrones, you will certainly recognise the scenes shot in Dubrovnik or Sibenik. But did you know that the HBO crew was not the first and that a lot of scenes for Winnetou were shot there? Made in German and Yugoslavian co-production and based on a novel by German writer Karl May, the film about adventures of Apache chief Winnetou is today considered a western movie classic. You can walk in the footsteps of the famous character in, among other places, the Plitvice Lakes National Park, the Northern Velebit National Park, Paklenica and Krka, and the Zrmanja River Canyon. You can expect stunning views and post-card landscapes everywhere.

Sightseeing and admiring the views if the first answer that comes to your mind when you are asked about what to do in Croatia. However, all water-related activities also rank high among interesting activities! You can swim, scuba dive, and explore the world of fabulous caves. Around the remote Island of Vis, the nature has scattered many small islands that are uninhabited today, and chucked in some volcanic rocks - a rare view in Dalmatia. Some 4 nautical miles to the south-west of the town of Komiža there is Biševo, and island that attracts visitors with its particularly captivating Blue Cave (Modra špilja). Considered one of the most beautiful caves in the world, it is 24 metres long, 10-12 metres deep and, most importantly, open to the public! You must come here before noon (either alone or in an organised group), as it has a hole in its ceiling through which sunshine penetrates giving a fantastic effect! You should also visit equally beautiful caves of Medvidina and Zelena. The latter is famous for… the green colour of water in it, caused by a special species of algae that grow on its walls. If you dream of a rest from the Adriatic, jump into one of the country's rivers. Or more specifically – hop into a kayak or pontoon and row ahead. The rivers Cetina, Zrmanja and Una are perfect for kayaking and rafting.

Croatia's attractions look beautiful from any perspective. However, there are some places which are best seen from the air. Only then will you get an opportunity to notice their unique charm. Fancy having some crazy fun? Paragliding (either on your own or in a tandem) or a flight in a tourist aeroplane will hit the bullseye and give you some memorable experiences. The Brijuni Islands National Park, which stretches over an archipelago to the south-east of Istria, look particularly spectacular. When seen from above, the islands are just dozens of big and small green spots with light edges created by sand and gravel beaches, scattered over the vast navy blue surface of water. You can expect similar experiences in the Kornaty National Park, an archipelago which is said to havethe highest concentration of islands in the entire Mediterranean.

What can you do in Croatia to feel like a local? Make yourself some olive oil! Many Croatian farmers, especially in Dalmatia, spend late summer and early autumn harvesting and processing olives, followed by feasting and celebrating. You can join the harvest in, for example, a family-run oil mill on the island of Šolta. After a brief instruction, you will manually collect the fruit in the company of the family and employees of the mill, and in the evening you can watch them processing the crops. Simple food based on bread, cheese and olive oil, something to drink, as well as still warm sunshine and readily visible effects of your labour are a perfect idea for a break from your professional reality. And you will be rewarded with a bottle of good olive oil. If you don't feel like working, you can simply watch the place. Just take a one-day tour during which you will see an olive grove, a mill and the neighbourhood, and taste the produce.
