Preparing a child for the flight

Planning to fly with your child? Learn how to prepare for the journey, which documents you need, and what ticket discounts may be available. Discover the key travel guidelines and help ensure your child enjoys a comfortable flight.

According to current EU regulations, every child must have their photo identification document: 

•  Domestic flights: national ID card, passport, school ID card (up to 18 years old), or a birth certificate copy (up to 7 years old).
• International flights (Schengen Area): national ID card or passport.
• International flights (non-Schengen destinations): passport and, if required, a visa*.

*Before traveling to a non-Schengen country, please check the required travel documents on government websites.

• You can book tickets for both a child and an accompanying adult on our website.
• If you would like to purchase a ticket for a child only, please contact our Contact Center and provide the booking reference of the accompanying adult.
• To receive a child fare discount, enter the child's age when making the booking (the discount does not apply to additional services).
• Children must be included in the same booking as the accompanying adult.  

Infants traveling on an accompanying adult’s lap receive a 90% discount on the regular fare on international flights and a 100% discount on domestic flights. One adult may travel with two infants; however, the second child must have a separate seat booked and travel in an approved child car seat equipped with its seat belt. 

If your child turns 2 during your journey, they will require their seat and a child ticket for the return flight. You can book this trip in one of the following ways: 

• Two separate tickets: purchase the outbound ticket as an infant ticket (travelling on an adult’s lap) and the return ticket as a child ticket with a separate seat. You can make the booking on our website or through our Contact Center.

• One ticket for the entire journey: purchase a return ticket with a separate seat for the child from the outset, using the fare applicable to children aged 2 and over.

Children aged 2 to 12 are entitled to their own seat and receive a 25% discount off the standard fare on international flights (except on selected European routes) and a 40% discount on domestic flights.

The discount is determined by the child’s age on the day the first journey begins (the outbound flight). Book a ticket for the entire trip. Even if your child turns 12 during the journey, they remain eligible for the discount on the return flight.

Children under the age of 12 must travel with a person who is at least 16 years old.

To make sure you sit together, choose our paid My Favourite Seat service before departure. Otherwise, seats are assigned automatically during check-in, and the number of adjacent seats available may be limited.

If a child (up to 12 years old) is travelling in a different cabin class from their parent or guardian, the Unaccompanied Minor (UM) service must be purchased. This service provides dedicated assistance from our cabin crew throughout the journey.

For safety reasons, children cannot be seated in exit rows.

As part of your child’s free baggage allowance, you can bring a folding stroller and/or a child car seat. The conditions for carrying these items depend on the child’s age and whether a separate seat has been purchased.

Smaller strollers may fit in the overhead storage compartments. Larger strollers, including prams with carrycots, must be handed to our ground staff before boarding and can be collected after landing. We assess each stroller individually, and permission to take it on board depends on its dimensions when folded.

Children under 2 years old

• Travelling on an accompanying adult’s lap: you may bring either a folding stroller or a child car seat. These items will be collected before boarding and returned after landing. If you wish to travel with both a stroller and a car seat, one of them must be checked in within your checked baggage allowance or transported as an additional item under our paid extra baggage service.
• Travelling with a purchased seat: you may bring both a folding stroller and a child car seat. A child traveling in their seat must use an approved child restraint system labeled “Certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft.”

Children aged 2 to 12

Kids aged 2 to 12 are entitled to the free carriage of both a stroller and a child car seat.

You cannot bring your bassinet on board. You can request one through our LOT Contact Center no later than 24 hours before departure. The service is available on long-haul flights operated by Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

The number of bassinets is limited, so we recommend requesting one as soon as you purchase your ticket. To use a bassinet, your child must not weigh more than 12 kg or measure more than 75 cm on the day of travel. The bassinet dimensions on board are 84 cm × 40 cm. We also provide a pillow and a blanket for your child during the flight.
