Awards gala for the best diploma theses at PLL LOT

Three-month paid internships under the wings of LOT, cash prizes and airline tickets were awarded to the winners of the second edition of the LOT Polish Airlines competition for the best thesis on aviation topics. All the knowledge of the economy, economics, management, marketing and all other fields accumulates at Polish Airlines like a lens. It's important for this rather hermetic industry to attract the best, says Michal Fijol, member of the LOT Polish Airlines board.

On March 17, 2023, awards were presented for the best aviation thesis competition in the master's, engineering and bachelor's thesis categories.

The Chapter of the Best Thesis Competition has selected the winners of the second edition in three categories:

Master's thesis:

  • Aleksandra Pasich - winner
  • Wojciech Pawelec - laureate
  • Piotr Babula - honorable mention

Bachelor's thesis:

  • Karol Osuchowski - winner
  • Cezary Kowalski - honorable mention
  • Mirosława Dmitruk - honorable mention

Engineering thesis:

  • Dawid Wirtek - winner
  • Przemysław Żmuda - winner
  • Jakub Zboch - winner
  • Piotr Węcel - honorable mention

Participants in the competition for the best thesis

On March 17, 2023, prizes were awarded in the competition for the best aviation thesis in the master's, engineering and bachelor's thesis categories. Graduates of bachelor's and master's degree programs and postgraduate studies from all public and non-public universities were invited to the second edition of the competition, organized by the national carrier. The competition included works thematically related to passenger and cargo aviation.

The heart of the company's business is people. This competition allows the company to get the best employees, to build new staff. We offer them opportunities for interesting development, because development in aviation, development of technology requires us to progress and requires that these people be prepared in a modern way.

- Katarzyna Lewandowska, CEO of LOT Polish Airlines.

According to Michal Fijol, board member for commercial affairs at LOT Polish Airlines, LOT's cooperation with academia is also very important so that the best students entering the job market know that the aviation industry is not only related to planes, pilots and crews, but that knowledge of economy, economics, management or marketing accumulates in the aviation company. In addition, he pointed out that the competition is not the only manifestation of LOT's cooperation with the academic community.

We are involved in stakeholder councils that are formed at universities and colleges. Sometimes these are business councils, also responsible for ensuring that the academic community has access to knowledge, to information, to current issues, to multiply knowledge about the company, and that in these processes students help us solve problems.

Awards gala for the best diploma works

According to Prof. Andrzej Majka of Rzeszow University of Technology - a supervisor whose two students received first prizes in the master's thesis and engineering thesis categories - many opportunities for cooperation between universities, especially technical universities, and business partners are opening up these days.

Our cooperation with LOT is going very well - mainly because we educate future pilots in the pilot specialty, and LOT Polish Airlines is very satisfied with the level of education, knowledge and practical skills mastered at our aviation education center.

- Prof. Andrzej Majka, currently working on developing a hydrogen-powered aircraft engine

The theses written by the professor's students, Aleksandra Pasich, who received the award for the best master's thesis, and Dawid Wirtek, author of the best engineering thesis, dealt with increasing the efficiency of flight operations, reducing the environmental burden of landing aircraft on people living near airports, and improving the safety of these operations.

I have designed a precision landing approach procedure to be able to land even in very limited visibility conditions. This increases the level of safety, reduces the crew's workload, contributes to reducing fuel consumption and at the same time increases airspace capacity. The results came out very promising and I intend to continue my research during my doctoral studies.

- Aleksandra Pasich

The winner of the award in the master's thesis category, and last year's winner of the award for the best engineering thesis, explained that the current landing procedure based on the ILS system, where communication with the aircraft is via radio waves, assumes the need for a fairly long straight section, which significantly increases the distance and time of the landing procedure.

The procedure I was able to design and test is based on the GLS satellite system, and assumes that the last phase of the landing approach takes place along a curve. This shortens the time of the procedure, as well as increasing its flexibility," said the winner, adding that during her studies at the Rzeszow University of Technology she received training for a commercial pilot's license and has already received an engagement with an airline as a first officer.

The high level of the submitted competition entries, evaluated anonymously by a jury of 18 professors, experts in various fields, was confirmed by Prof. Elżbieta Szymańska, chairwoman of the Competition Chapter.

The winning, very interesting and very specialized paper , "Concept of curved precision approach based on GLS and its influence on flight and airspace efficiency" by Aleksandra Pasich met the highest standards in terms of merit and quality of the research conducted.

Awards gala for the best diploma theses at PLL LOT

Michal Fijol noted that it is candidates like Ola Pasich and Dawid Wirtek, who already work at LOT Polish Airlines, that the company wants to see at home. That's why the carrier has also been organizing summer 3-month internships for students for several years.

A few days ago, we announced the opening of recruitment for the next internship edition, and I hope that, like last year, we will have many applications and many people will come to LOT for an internship and later stay with us, being responsible for important areas of doing business at LOT Polish Airlines.
