Daffodils in the meadow, Connecting us Memory, LOT

On April 19, POLIN Museum volunteers distributed daffodils on the streets of Warsaw, Lodz, Krakow, Bialystok, Lublin and Wroclaw. Also, our airplane crews pinned symbolic yellow flowers to their uniforms. From on-board announcements, passengers learned that April 19 marks the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. This is not the first time that daffodils have graced the decks of LOT planes.

Why the daffodil?

One of the ghetto survivors, Marek Edelman, every year on the anniversary of the uprising (until his death in 2009), placed a bouquet of yellow flowers at the monument to the Ghetto Heroes in Warsaw's Muranów district.

Maintaining the memory of the participants in the ghetto uprising

The action by the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews is being organized for the eleventh time - to keep alive the memory of the participants in the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. In Warsaw alone, 450,000 paper flowers were distributed - that's how many Jews and Jewish women there were in the ghetto at the time of its greatest overpopulation. An additional 150,000 flowers went to Jewish communities and organizations around the world.

"Don't be indifferent."

In 2023, the Daffodils campaign was part of a larger program: Don't Be Indifferent. 80th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. The centerpiece of the celebration was the exhibition Around Us a Sea of Fire. The fate of Jewish civilians during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. From April 9 to 23, a wall near the Centrum subway will be decorated with a mural commemorating civilians who were in the Warsaw Ghetto during the uprising.
